Learn more about Belize City and see the countryside when your cruise stops in Belize. Ride a Mountain Bike along the jungle trails while enjoying the flora and fauna of the area.
After tendering ashore, you'll start by meeting your guide outside your Belize cruise tender terminal where you'll board your air-conditioned transportation and start your scenic sightseeing excursion across Belize City. The country's main port and its financial and industrial center are here. You'll pass by and get the chance to see the Old Capital while learning about its rich history and culture. It was twice devastated by hurricanes in the 1900s.
After your scenic sightseeing, you'll be heading along the Northern Highway where you'll pass the Belize Old River, which has served 4 civilizations - Mayan, Spanish, British, and Belizean. You'll pass several rural communities on the way to the jungles where you'll be mountain biking the trails. You'll be given some safety instructions and a helmet before following your guide on the single-file trails through the jungle. You'll be passing caves, waterfalls, and a few small Mayan ruins along the way.
These jungles were home to the Mayan people from 200BC to 1200AD and you'll see evidence of their civilization in the ancient mounds and temple ruins. The trails were used by Spanish Mahogany log woodcutters in the 17th and 18th centuries until the British stopped logging.
Keep your eyes and ears ready. There are over 600 varieties of birds in Belize and you can watch out for the national bird, the Toucan, plus the Scarlet Macaw, Motmot, Harpy Eagle, Egret, and Frigate to name a few. While crossing multiple streams keep an eye out for Ocelots, Grey Fox, Coatimundi, and Howler Monkeys in the distance.
As you ride the trail your guide will stop and show you several medicinal plants and explain their purpose and how they're used. You'll be biking from 45 to 60 minutes and then will stop for a typical local lunch like stewed chicken, rice, beans, and fried plantains.
When finished at the bike camp, you'll board again your transportation where you can enjoy a 30-minute ride back to your Belize cruise terminal.
