A fun mix of Mayan Ruins and leisurely time by the beach. A great way to enjoy your cruise shore excursion day in Belize!
This jam-packed Belize Mayan Ruins and Beach shore excursion will begin right outside your cruise tender terminal in Belize City. Your Belize shore excursion guide will get you checked in and lead you to your air-conditioned transportation that even has free WiFi. Throughout this Altun Ha and Beach Excursion, the guide will give you information about Belize, the Mayas, and what to expect on your excursion.
Altun Ha Mayan Ruins are about a 45 to 60-minute drive from the Belize cruise ship pier; along the way, you can enjoy the scenic highlights of Belize City and the beautiful Caribbean countryside.
Rising out of the lush Belize rainforest, you will spot Altun Ha Mayan Ruins. Once a Belize Maya ceremonial center, Altun Ha (rock stone pond) was home to more than 500 structures. Built in 250 BC, Altun Ha was also an important Mayan trade center in Belize.
The ruins were discovered in 1963 and among the most famous discovery at Altun Ha Mayan Ruins was the tomb of a priest in the Temple of the Masonry Altars. Inside the tomb was a jade carving of the Mayan Sun God, Kinich Ahau weighing almost 10 pounds.
When you have completed your guided cruise excursion of Altun Ha Mayan Ruins and its ancient past, your shore excursion guide and transportation will take you back toward Belize City. There are no beaches close to Belize City and guests must travel over to San Pedro or Caye Caulker islands for some beach time. But just outside of the city is a man-made and lagoon-like saltwater park called Cucumber Beach, which will make a nice ending to your day.
Located right along the ocean, this man-made saltwater pool offers guests a fun time. Lay back on the lounge chairs, float in the inner tubes, try the rope swing, bounce on a floating trampoline, or venture to their massive water slide known as "Slippery Conch" which drops 65 feet down into the water. There is a constant flow of salt water through the filtration system to circulate the water from the Caribbean. Some of the activities available may require an extra charge on-site.
Guests may use the lounge chairs and shaded palapas on the sandy beach area. There is a restaurant on-site where guests may order food and beverages at their expense. Bottled water is provided for the ruins part of this Belize cruise excursion. Also on-site is the Old Belize museum - entrance fee is $5.00usd per person and is not included in the excursion cost. Guests have approximately 2 hours to enjoy at Cucumber.
When your fun-filled Belize shore excursion day is completed, the guide and your transportation will take you back to the Belize cruise ship terminal and drop you off for the short tender ride to your ship.
