A fun combination of exploring the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben and a fun, relaxing visit to the famous "7 colors blue" Lagoon topped off with lunch and beverages included.
You will meet your guide just a short walking distance from your Costa Maya cruise pier. You will get checked in and then board the transportation for the short 50-minute drive to the ruins. The beautiful Mayan Ruins of Chacchoben are surrounded by lush vegetation which contributed to a late discovery by an American archaeologist Peter Harrison, who reported the site to Mexican authorities in 1972.
Before this date, only the locals knew of the existence of the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. The excavation by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Chacchoben (Mayan meaning The Place of the Red Corn) started in 1994 and only in the year 2002, the archaeological site opened to the public. Your Costa Maya shore excursion guide will walk you through some of the property explaining and taking questions along the way. Due to sheer size and time restraints, guests will only see the main structures.
Chacchoben's main structures are dated between the years 200 and 700 AD, with signs of having been rebuilt several times. To this date, excavations have been undertaken only at the five buildings that rest on the building known as the great basement. The purpose of those ruins is believed to be for religious, civil, and astronomy science purposes and up to this day reveals more and more answers about the ancient and mysterious Mayan civilization.
After your visit to Chacchoben, it is off to the beautiful Seven Color Lagoon, famous for its seven different shades of blue. You will enjoy a relaxing visit at a family-owned restaurant and lagoon-side facility. Take a swim, use the kayaks, slides, etc. as it is easy to enjoy the natural beauty of this unique lagoon! Indulge yourself with a delicious Mexican lunch that consists of chicken or beef fajitas, a burger (for kids only), and 3 drinks (soft drinks, beer, water, or natural juice).
You will be taken back to your Costa Maya cruise ship terminal area or if time allows, there is an optional drop-off in town for shopping. Those opting for the town drop-off can make their way back to the pier at their leisure and own expense.
Enjoy two of the main highlights of Costa Maya Cruise Excursions, the famous Chacchobben Mayan Ruins, and the beautiful Seven Color Lagoon in Bacalar!
