When you order, you have the option of what size group you want to join - for the most personal and more one-on-one experience, pick the VIP group option with a maximum of 8 adults per group. There is also the option to join up with a small group with 16 adults maximum or the regular option with 40 adults max.
Just outside your Naples cruise terminal, you will meet your friendly staff who will lead you to your transportation for the short, 40-minute drive to Pompeii. Upon arrival, you will have time for the restroom and to purchase your tickets to the ruins that were buried under up to 20 feet of ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. The site was actually lost until it was uncovered at the turn of the 17th century, and further discoveries were made in the 18th century. The artifacts were remarkably well preserved as a result of a lack of water and moisture below the city, allowing archaeologists to learn a great deal about the life of the city before the eruption.
Today, excavations are no longer permitted because of a moratorium that was imposed to preserve what remains. Several factors have combined to increase the rate of deterioration, including weather, animals, and tourism. Despite restricted access to a significant number of buildings, you will have more than enough to see in your time at the ruins. A passionate, knowledgeable, English-speaking guide will provide intriguing historical commentary during your visit. Do not forget your camera.
Once your visit to the archaeological site is completed, it's time to eat. You'll have two tasty options to choose from, both designed to enhance your Italian experience.
The first option is a pizza lunch. And why not? Pizza originated in Naples after all. You'll be able to choose from the savory Pizza Marinara, the traditional cheeseless pizza, or the delightful Pizza Margherita with mozzarella topping. A soft drink beverage is included with the meal.
The second meal option includes a wine-tasting aspect. You will be able to sample 3 different wines with your lunch. The meal itself includes a mixed plate of cheeses, salami, and grilled vegetables, spaghetti with Vesuvio tomatoes and basil, and a fruit dessert to finish it off. Since the ingredients used to prepare this meal are freshly picked in season, the menu might vary a little depending on when you are visiting.
After returning to your shuttle, you will hike 1/2 mile (1000 meters) to the bus parking area, purchase your ticket and begin your hike up a serpentine path that will lead you to the edge of the volcanic crater. Here you will be guided through the Mt. Vesuvius National Park examining, first hand, the devastation inflicted on man by nature. It is here that pine forests and lush woods blooming with bright yellow flowers meet the unique volcanic landscape. You will then make your way back down the slope and return to your transport. The hike takes approximately 2 hours from start to finish. It is a slow-paced trip up and back but does require good physical conditioning.
As you make your way back to Naples you will enjoy the spectacular drive with amazing views of the Bay of Naples. Upon return to your Naples cruise pier, you may continue to explore at your leisure and own expense.
The opportunity to explore one of the most devastating events in the history of mankind is just a short drive away from Naples. Hear the stories that changed a city and nation for all time.
Note: This excursion is NOT private, the price breakdown is depending on the group size you want to join. Size may vary slightly as there is a maximum of adults per group; children may be added.
