You can start this fun-filled Rome sightseeing excursion day by meeting with your friendly shore excursion staff at the transportation hub near the cruise port. Hop onboard comfortable transportation with large viewing windows and enjoy a scenic 1-hour drive to Rome from your port in Civitavecchia. During the ride, your shore excursion leader will provide information about the history, culture, and sites of interest. This excursion is designed to give guests the most freedom to explore. The transportation will take you to the central points and the leader will provide you with a map, then off you go!
Your transportation will park close to the Vatican and St. Peter's Square and you'll have an approximately 1.5-hour stop. Your excursion leader will take you on foot from the ancient fortress to Castel Sant'Angelo to St. Peter's Square and then you can explore on your own. The square was designed and built by Bernini approximately 1656-1667 and was designed to welcome all. Here you can visit the famous St. Peter's Basilica take some beautiful pictures of the Egyptian obelisk or walk to Castel Sant'Angelo which is the mausoleum of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Make sure to return to your meeting point on time to take the bus and continue with your route. Please note that entrance fees to view any of the sights during your excursion day are not included. Guests should check with the excursion staff to see if there will be time due to possible long lines and wait times.
Once back on board, your transportation will drive along the Tiber River for some amazing panoramic views. You'll pass Tiber Island, a boat-shaped island that has been connected with the city since antiquity. You'll also spot the Pyramid of Cestious, one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Rome. You'll also have glimpses of the famous Colosseum, the Papal Archbasilica of St. John in Lateran, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Circus Maximum, and the Mouth of the Truth.
Your Civitavecchia Panoramic Rome City Sightseeing Excursion Day is not over yet. When your transportation reaches the baroque center of Rome, it will drop you off by the Theatre of Marcellus where you will walk to Venice Square and the Trevi Fountain. Don't forget to throw a coin in the fountain to ensure your future return to Rome! At this point, you can continue exploring the area or take a break and have some authentic Italian lunch (your excursion staff can give you their top suggestions for places to grab a bite to eat).
Nearby is the Pantheon and Navona Square if you wish to explore on your own. The baroque architecture of the square would captivate you. You would see the Fountain of the Four Rivers located at the center of the square, the church of St. Agnes, and magnificent palaces such as the Braschi Palace or Lancellotti Palace.
