If you want to discover the amazing city of Civitavecchia but don’t know where to start this is the perfect Excursion for you! You will start your incredible day meeting your friendly and professional shore excursion staff and the Transportation Hub, near the harbors! You will be taken to the comfortable and new hop-on hop-off bus and you are ready to go!
During the excursion, there will be an assistant on board the bus ready to support you, accompany you along the route, and give you historical explanations of the places you will visit. However, you are more than welcome to get off as many times as you want at any of the stops to explore on your own and continue on the magnificent Hop on Hop off once you are back on board, or you can just relax and enjoy the ride during the whole route! Your assistant will provide you with a map on board with the stops and the route so that you always know where you are and what sights you are admiring.
Please find the stops of your route below:
1. The historic Piazza Calamatta, from here, you can reach the Old Town from Piazza Leandra and visit the ancient and small Church of the Stella. Passing through the Porta dell’Archetto until you reach Piazza Saffi, you will see the remains of the ancient city walls built by Antonio da Sangallo.
2. The Cathedral of St Francis of Assisi, Civitavecchia’s main church, was built in the 17th century. You can also see the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia, housed in the 18th-century palace of Clement XIII. The Michelangelo Fort was commissioned by the famous artist Bramante to defend the Port of Civitavecchia from constant pirate attacks. The Marina of Civitavecchia, where the famous Statue of the Kiss stands and where Civitavecchia’s historic seafront winds along.
3. The Pirgo is the perfect place to find restaurants for all tastes and budgets! There are many typical seafood dishes, including Zuppa di Pesce Civitavecchiese (Civitavecchia fish soup), Fettuccine allo Scoglio (fettuccine with seafood), I Polpetti Affogati alla Civitavecchiese (Civitavecchia-style poached meatballs), le Lumachelle di mare (sea snails), and Calamari (squid) just to name a few. Please note the food is not included and will be at your own expense.
4. The Church of the Japanese Martyrs, where you can admire the magnificent frescoes by Japanese painter Luca Hasegawa.
5. The Terme Taurine or Terme di Traiano is named after the famous Roman Emperor Trajan and is also one of the most important thermal complexes of the Roman era.
At the end of the route, you will jump on the bus for the scenic ride back to your Transportation Hub, near the harbors, or you are more than welcome to keep exploring on your own at your own expense.
