Once your ship has docked on the Big Island of Hawaii, you will meet your guide directly at their offices near the cruise ship pier in Hilo. Your guide will help you board the transportation that will take you to the Dive Shop which is only a quick 5-minute ride away. Upon arrival at the dive shop, you will be fitted with a mask, snorkel, and fins. Your belongings will be stored at the dive shop. Do not worry if you have never snorkeled before, in that case, you will receive a thorough snorkel briefing. Then head off to the seaside with your expert snorkel guide.

The location of your snorkel excursion will depend on the weather conditions, which your professional guide will expertly access. You will snorkel from either Leleiwi or Richardson's Beach, both of which are located close to the dive shop. Leleiwi Beach has coves, several inlets, natural ponds, and lava rock tide pools. The coral reef close to shore makes Leleiwi Beach popular with snorkelers and scuba divers alike. Richardson's Beach has a marine conservation area, lava rock tide pools, and natural ponds like Leleiwi. Richardson's Beach is one of the unique beaches with black and green sand, which is composed of lava and olivine crystals. The coral reef here is situated close to shore making it a great place to snorkel.

Your guide will help you into the water and make sure all your snorkel equipment is comfortable and functioning correctly before leading you on your 45-minute snorkel adventure. You will have the chance to see many different kinds of tropical fish, hard coral as well as other marine animals. Hawaiian reefs possess some of the most abundant levels of marine endemic species in the world sheltering over 700 species of fish, 400 species of algae, and over 2000 species of invertebrates. Your guide's expert eye will help you spot other marine creatures such as sea cucumbers, and sea urchins, and if you are lucky, you will snorkel with a sea turtle!

Upon exiting the water you will feel like you've just swum in an aquarium. You will return to the dive shop in the van to gather your belongings before returning to your Hilo cruise ship pier.

Excursion Notes

• We recommend bringing a swimsuit, change of clothes, towel, biodegradable sun protection, and cash for food, beverages, shopping, tips, etc.
  
• A flotation vest can be provided if you need it, not mandatory.
• A minimum of 2 guests is required per booking.
• Please note individuals who cannot swim unassisted will not be permitted to enter the water.
  

Where we meet

For this Hilo Guided Black Sand Beach Shore Snorkel Excursion, you will meet directly at your local guide offices, near your Hilo cruise ship terminal. All details will be printed on your Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket.

Excursion Restrictions

• The minimum participation age is 6 years old.
• Guests should be comfortable in the water and have basic swimming skills.
• Children must be supervised by a parent/guardian at all times.
• Please note individuals who cannot swim unassisted will not be permitted to enter the water.

Excursion FAQ

Cancellation

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
  
• Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
• Refunds may be subject to a service charge fee as determined by the payment processor, please refer to Terms and Conditions for more information.
