Lush tropical vegetation and countless palm trees surround the outstanding Mayan Ruins of Kohunlich. Located on a hill covered with cohune palms, it derives its name from the English word Cohune Ridge where cohune palms grew.

Your English, speaking, federally certified shore excursion guide will be giving you background information and the history of the area and Mayans. Dating back to 200 BC, Kohunlich covers about 21 acres but is mostly un-excavated. There are approximately 200 Mayan ruin mounds that still hold the mysteries, hidden in the Costa Maya jungle.

What has been discovered is that the city was engineered with an elaborate channel system to hold rainwater. There are also many raised platforms and pyramids. The most famous structure so far is the Temple of the Masks dating around 500AD. This is a structure with a center staircase leading to the top. To each side of the stairs are enormous stucco masks with human faces. Built in honor of the sun god, there were originally 8 giant masks. Today only 5 stands as 3 masks were somehow looted.

There is an enormous central plaza that is lined with pyramids, temples, an acropolis, and platforms. This is a beautiful sight that remains uncrowded and visitors have not tarnished, or unspoiled by tourism. Your transportation will take you back to your Costa Maya cruise pier afterward.

There really is no other word that I can use. This excursion was amazing and worth every penny. It was only the 5 of us. Our guide, Wintsi, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. While the drive was a bit long (2 hours), the final destination was well worth it. We practically had the ruins all to ourselves and got to see howler monkeys. Will definitely use again. Thank you Wintsi for the drinks and sandwiches. They were delicious.

great trip to Chacchoban

Originally I booked Kohunlich ruins tour, but there were not enough people booked. Excursioneer notified me via email, all about the change to Chacchoban ruins. They also refunded the difference in price - a plus for them! When I got to the pier area, I had no trouble finding a representative of the tour company, who drove me a few blocks to the office, where I was logged in for their tour. I did have to wait a little while for other tour customers to arrive, but there is a good shaded area to wait in. When we boarded the nice van to travel, our driver Carlos, also our guide, began telling us all about the Maya culture in the area. He pointed out small hills or humps out in pastures telling us that those are UnExcavated Maya Structures- so Many! At the site Carlos led our group all over the many trails and to the many structures, giving details as much as are known anout them, the trails indeed can be uneven, so good walking shoes are best to wear, we were given bottled water if we wanted some. Overall I loved this tour, and will book again next cruise. Im a “Senior” person in fairly good shape and I had No trouble walking there . On our trip back we stopped at a local fruit stand for fresh pineapple ! Ohh So Delicious !!

Guide was very informative. It would have been better if we had \"whispers\" so we all could hear him when he spoke. Site was larger than expected but very well worth it. Lots of steps to climb.

Our guide and driver were outstanding. They really care about their country and their culture. Our guide was wealth of knowledge when it comes to the ancient Mayan culture, he seemed to be very proud. I really liked this excursion not being too crowded. We got as much water we needed and the sandwich was delicious.

The tour was awesome. The guide was very knowledgeable and he explained every fact ina a funny easy way, I loved that. He walked with us handing out cold water to everyone, taking pictures for us. That attention to detail is above and beyond. The meeting location was very detailed on the ticket we got no way to get lost. A very enjoyable and recommended tour.

We were here on a cruise and due to the time we were in Port our excursion was changed to the Chacchoben ruins. When we met the group taking us on the tour, they said due to road construction they were concerned about getting us back to the ship on time. They only charged us for the Chacchoben tour which was less than the Kohunlich ruins tour. I was extremely pleased they did not just take the chance and had our best interest in mind. It actually turned out better than we could have imagined. The drive was less than an hour and our guide was so knowledgeable and even showed us pictures he had taken himself to show us how the sun actually hits the ruins. He was fantastic and we felt like we were getting a private tour. On the way back, they stopped and let us taste the pineapples we saw being sold on the side of the streets. Definitely better than the store bought ones. We even learned a lot on the drive to and from the ruins. It was a great excursion and I really appreciate the decision to not take a chance with us not making it back to the ship in time. - One item to note - when leaving the ship to meet the this tour - walk totally out of the Port area and pass the guard shack. Once we did this they were right there with a megaphone so there was no way we could miss them.

This was a great tour for the history buff, which my wife and I both are. We were very surprised that the ruins that we saw were so big, and there are so many to see. Photos do not do them justice. The guide was also very good and had a lot of information about the Mayan ruins and some stories to share with everyone. We were very happy with this tour and we are glad that we got to see the famous ruins.

We really loved this tour and all the different things that we learned while on it. We got to see some beautiful ancient ruins and hear about some of the ceremonies that used to take place in them. There is quite a bit of walking so definitely have your walking shoes on for this one. We also enjoyed the ride to ruins also. Very educational!

I can not blame the weather since we did the tour in September. I had a collapsible umbrella with me and that provided instant shade! The ruins were incredible. Our guide picked us up right at the pier and we got on our way. The van was clean and air conditioned. The Mayan guide spoke fluent English with hardly any accent. He was such a nice young man who gave us a lot of information about his ancestors, history and heritage. He also gave us a wonderful talk about some of the native plants that grow on the grounds including some of the ones used for medicinal purposes. This was a lovely excursion.
