See the impressive Diocletian's Palace on this short, guided walking excursion. Discover the historic center of Split on a short guided walking shore excursion. This is a great way to enjoy your visit to Croatia and have time afterward to explore on your own.
You will meet your guide at the Diocletian Palace complex just a few minutes from your Split cruise ship pier. Considered one of Split's main highlights, you will begin a 90-minute guided walking exploration through several of the structures of the larger palace compound. Diocletian Palace is considered one of the most impressive Roman ruins.
You will begin in the cellars of the well-preserved Diocletian's Palace built by Emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the 4th century. Diocletian voluntarily gave up the throne in the 4th century and built the palace half as his retirement residence and half military garrison. Where he once had livestock and supplies stored, now are merchants selling a wide variety of goods and souvenirs.
Climbing up to street level, you will enter the Peristyle Square, located in the center of the compound. From here, observe the Cathedral of St. Duje, named after the patron saint of Split. The current structure is constructed on the remains of a Roman mausoleum. Next to it is the Bell Tower dedicated to St Duje. You will also visit the nearby Temple of Jupiter, now a baptistery, and see the black granite sphinx.
During your stroll through the winding cobblestoned streets, you will also see the Golden and Silver Gates of the Palace compound.
At the conclusion of your excursion, your guide may provide you with suggestions of places to explore on your own. A stroll through one of the biggest coastal markets around, with its vibrant colors and various offerings, is interesting to those browsing as well as shopping. Wander the winding narrow streets, dotted with pre-Romanesque churches and Gothic chapels, squares with outdoor cafes, and fascinating art galleries offering some unique contemporary art.
Please note that the walking excursion includes a vast amount of walking including uneven steps. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable walking attire.
