For those looking for a private Progreso cruise excursion that combines Mayan Ruins with sightseeing, shopping, ruins, and more...you tailor the day the way you want to. Your federally certified, English-speaking guide will meet you just outside the cruise terminal on the Progreso pier - there is no need to take the shuttle into town! You will climb in the air-conditioned transportation and your day begins for just you and your selected private party.
Dzibilchaltun, pronounced dzeeble-chal-toon, is situated just south of Progreso. There is a big advantage of the close proximity, less travel time, and more time at the ruins. Along the short route, your guide will go over the play for the day. They will give you an educational and informative excursion! Have your questions ready and your cameras handy. When you arrive at Dzibilchaltun, you will have the opportunity to see many of the structures and learn more about the Mayan culture.
One of the most famous structures is the Temple of the Seven Dolls named for the seven small dolls found when archaeologists discovered the ruins in the 1950's. One of the unique features of the Temple is the position the Mayans constructed the building. The Temple is situated so that on the day of the Spring Equinox, the sun rises and shines directly through one temple window and out the other.
An unusual oddity is the ruins of a 16th-century Spanish church built within Dzibilchaltun grounds making it a unique combination clash of religions side by side. Located on the grounds is a visitor center with maps, restrooms, and a gift shop. There is also a renovated museum with many examples of Mayan artifacts that you may view.
Your private transportation will return you to your Progreso pier when your excursion is over.
