A visit to the Yucatan is not complete without visiting the renowned Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins. This is a private Progreso cruise excursion to the Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins where you get your own federally certified, English-speaking guide and transportation to see the incredible grounds and structures.
Your shore excursion guide will meet you just outside your Progreso cruise pier terminal and get you onboard your private transportation. You do NOT need to take the free shuttle into town! Your private shore excursion guide will be providing you and your selected party with a variety of information, fun facts, and above all an educational as well as entertaining excursion. The ride to the ruins is about 2 hours and you will ride in comfort with plenty of room in your private air-conditioned vehicle...no over-crowding on this excursion!
The ruins are vast and cover approximately 6 square miles. Your licensed and bi-lingual guide will walk you through, point out, and discuss some of the highlights of a small selection of ruins due to time.
The most prominent structure on the grounds is El Castillo (the castle), also known as The Pyramid of Kukulcan. Kukulcan is a Mayan feathered serpent figure that resembles the Aztec flying reptile, Quetzalcoatl. This structure rises over 98ft tall. Your guide will explain why El Castillo plays a major role during the Spring and Fall equinoxes. Although impressive to look at, please know that climbing this or any of the structures in Chichen Itza is prohibited.
Another interesting feature of the ruins is the number of ball courts found there. A total number of 13 courts, with the largest being The Great Ball Court. Slightly resembling a combination of basketball and soccer, this game had an unusual twist. Sacrificial connections were not to the losers of the match but rather to the winners!
You may also get to see the Temple of Warriors, the Sacred Cenote (freshwater sinkhole), the Temple of the Jaguar, the Platform of Venus, the Temple of the Warriors, the Group of a Thousand Columns, the House of the Metates, and House of the Mestizas, The Observatory and so many more of the ruins found within Chichen Itza. Note, that this excursion involves a lot of walking and has many uneven surfaces.
See, learn, and explore with your private guide before heading back to your Progreso cruise ship pier. This is the perfect option for history lovers and adventure seekers!
THIS EXCURSION IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPS ARRIVING BEFORE 10:00 AM LOCAL due to darkness and ruin hours.
