The small town of Amalfi is one of 13 municipalities that make up the legendary Amalfi Coast. Dating back to the 9th century, Amalfi gained UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition in 1997. It is well-known as a popular vacation spot of the rich and famous with its pastel-colored houses and buildings perched on the hillside leading down to the water. Amalfi has been the setting for many movies and TV shows filming sets as well as featured in books. There are several sandy beaches, top restaurants, and cafes specializing in seafood as well as authentic Italian food, quality shops and boutiques, and interesting historical sites. Perhaps you'd like to simply relax on the beach that is located just in front of the main square. The ocean waters will definitely call you to jump in for a swim, so bring your beach towel and sunscreen! If that isn't your cup of tea, stroll through the narrow streets, visiting local craftsmen in their shops. Amalfi is well known the world over for its history and tradition of papermaking and for its handpainted ceramics. The shopping opportunities are tempting.
For the sightseers, one of the primary sites that you won't want to miss is the Amalfi Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea), a medieval Roman Catholic church located in the Piazza del Duomo. Construction of this stunning cathedral began in the 9th and 10th centuries, with numerous additions and redecorations over the centuries. Not only is the architecture a unique and beautiful combination of styles, but inside you will find some stunning artistry as well. One of the crucifixes is made of mother-of-pearl and was transported to the cathedral from the Holy Land. Dedicated to the apostle Saint Andrew, the Amalfi Cathedral is the repository for his relics.
