Belize is well known for its natural beauty, untouched areas, tropical jungle, and diverse wildlife. On this Monkey Trail Shore Excursion, you will find yourself in the center of mother nature and the natural habitat of the famous Howler Monkeys of Belize.
Your adventure starts right outside the Belize cruise terminal where your friendly, English-speaking excursion guide will greet you and get the fun going. The Monkey Sanctuary is located about 35 miles outside of Belize City. As the transportation passes through Belize City, your guide will point out the sites and give you all kinds of information about the area and the famous Howler Monkeys. This is not a zoo! The Black Howler Monkeys are an endangered species. The Sanctuary was founded in the 1980s, it is a collective effort of the 7 villages located within the sanctuary to protect the monkeys. They are working with the primate population, which is now around 3,000. Belize locals call the primates, baboons. The Belize Howler Monkey Sanctuary consists of approximately 20 square miles along the Belize River and comprises a combination of dense jungle, pasture, farmland, and small village life.
You will start your hike in the village of Bermudan Landing. Your Belize cruise excursion guide will lead you through the jungle to get views of these intelligent animals perched in the treetops. Your arrival in their territory will be loudly announced with the famous grunts and deep howls, from which the monkeys get their name. They can be heard up to 5 miles away. Do not forget your camera! Mother Nature is unpredictable and you never know what you will get to see.
While hiking along the trail, your guide will also point out the different flora and fauna; you will be hiking for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the group. You will get to enjoy one of the most innovative and unique eco-tourism projects in Central America! At the end of this excursion, your guide will take you back to the Belize cruise terminal when the hike is completed.
