The first thing you will notice is the Renaissance era walls encircling the city that remain standing! Initially a defensive rampart, they were converted to a stunning pedestrian promenade upon losing their military importance, with each of the four sides being lined with a different species of trees.

Then it's on to the city of Pisa, which started as a famous sea-trading republic. The Campanile (a.k.a. Leaning Tower of Pisa) has a very interesting story! This free-standing bell tower sits behind the Pisa Cathedral, being the third oldest structure in Cathedral Square. Did you know that the famous tilt, which is now more than 16 feet off perpendicular, began during construction of the second floor of its total eight stories? The design was actually flawed from the beginning because the tower was constructed on very unstable soil that was not sufficient to withstand its weight. The Campanile has now been stabilized and is once again open to visitors who wish to enter and climb the approximately 300 stairs to the top. Your driver will take you to the Field of Miracles where the tower is located for a unique photo stop. Guests will not enter the tower. You will have a comfortable, relaxing drive on the way back to your ship.

When you are returned to your La Spezia cruise port, you will have experienced some of the most incredible highlights in the Tuscan region on your own private excursion!

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
