Understand why the land and sea have always been so important to the Hawaiian people. Enjoy a full day excursion to see Maui Tropical Plantation, Iao Valley State Park and Maui Ocean Center.
Departing from the Kahului Maui cruise pier, it is a short 20-minute drive to the Maui Tropical Plantation, a 60-acre (24 hectares) working plantation located in the Waikapu Valley. Here you will enjoy a fully narrated, 40-minute tram ride that takes you through beautifully manicured grounds to see many of the tropical fruits and other produce grown here. Some of the trees, bushes and crops you will see include sugarcane, coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, papaya, mango, guava and bananas.
During the tram ride, you will be treated to a coconut husking demonstration and learn more about the benefits and uses of coconuts. After the tram ride, there will be time to browse through the Kumu farmers market and the large gift shop where there are usually some local homemade or locally grown samples for tasting.
Continuing west, a 20-minute drive takes you to the 4,000-acre (1618 hectare) Iao Valley State Park. Here, you will take a pleasant walk on a 3000 foot (914 meters) paved path through the verdant greenery to one of Maui's most striking rock formations, the 1,200 foot tall (365 meters) Kukaemoku or Iao Needle. Over millions of years, erosion has carved it into its current day form. Lush green vegetation has covered most of it giving it a nice green coat. You will also learn about the valley's bloody history.
Turning south, a 20-minute drive brings you to the west coast and the Maui Ocean Center. Here, through a combination of more 60 indoor-outdoor exhibits, a walk-through underwater tunnel and the largest collection of live Pacific corals, you will have an up-close view of the marine inhabitants of the Pacific Ocean including native fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles, 6 species of sharks and some of the oceans most elusive creatures. You will have approximately 90 minutes at the center. There is even a touch tank area for a real hands-on experience.
Taking a slightly different route back through the Waikapu Valley, your excursion ends back at the Kahului Maui cruise pier approximately 30 minutes later.
