Once you reach the summit, you will forget about what time you woke up, as you begin an adventure you will talk about for years to come.
After your early morning meeting point pick-up at your Lahaina tender pier, you will travel across Maui island to Mount Haleakala which towers more than 10,000 feet above the island. During the approximately 90 minute drive to the park, there will be a chance to rest. For those in your group that would like to come along but not do any biking, there is a special van only observer fee - see the price list.
Located in the Haleakala National Park, the dormant volcano is the highest point on the island of Maui. At the higher elevations you will see lava landscapes while the lower elevations are home to farms and native birds. After arrival at the park, it is approximately a 45-minute drive up to the summit. As your vehicle climbs, your views of local flora give way to far reaching vistas as you drive right through the clouds to reach the crater's rim known as House of the Sun.
Then take your place, as the sky begins to lighten you will greet the day as the first rays of sun come creeping over the volcano. Please note that the temperatures at the top will be much cooler than when you are coasting down the hillside - layering is suggested.
Following your sunrise, you will drive down to the biking starting point (base camp) where your professional guides will go over the equipment and the use of the hand-operated brakes. The bikes have ergonomic seats, wide "bullhorn" style handlebars and fat tires to make your biking experience more comfortable as you coast downhill. There are beverages and muffins to get you ready for the fun ahead. The guide will fit you to a bike and then it is time to head out.
You will start your downhill adventure behind your group leader at the front of the line. The chase van will bring up the rear as support and both staff are in constant contact via radio for any assistance. You will travel much further than most of the other bike excursions as you will coast down about 38 miles of paved road, through more than 200 twists and make several stops for photos of the incredible changing scenery over the next 2.5 to 3 hours. During the stops, you will hear some of the volcano's history and local lore.
Reaching the bottom of the slope, you will hop off your bike and have a stretch before getting in the van. There will be a stop will be made for guests to purchase breakfast at a local restaurant before leaving the Haleakala area. After breakfast, the van will take you the 90 minute drive back to your cruise tender pier in Lahaina.
Please note: Due to security requirements, wait times are expected at the National Park entrance. We appreciate your patience as this is out of our control. Guests choosing not to bike down after signing up for a bike, may ride along in the van but there will be no discount or refund.
